“The first guides came from Maīa to restore harmony. Then, they got in their Pixom Q'aq'al (Cloak), and left to the skies.” Maya Sacred Book of the Popol Vuh
For over 50 years, I had the privilege to interview scores of Maya Elders and locals. I have asked them to recount the most important aspects of their culture, history, belief systems, and legends. Never has an Elder said, “We predict the world will end,” because that is not and never was a Maya prediction. At the very least, I want to set the record straight on this one thing; the Maya Calendar never ends, there is always a new beginning.
The collapse of the Maya civilization is considered one of the greatest unsolved mysteries. “One can only speculate their downfall from the numerous explanations presented by researchers. The Maya and their way of life is virtually a complete mystery to our modern way of thinking. How did this advanced society disappear without leaving any solid evidence of their downfall? Is this a sign of a sudden collapse from a cataclysm or, like some believe, abandonment?”
Through the years of information gathered and interviews that I was lucky enough to obtain, a logical explanation was missing. I discarded hundreds of tapes, interviews, pictures, and drawings that I thought were unusable because I couldn't understand their meaning. Is there any truth behind ancient texts, myths or legends? We know that
myths are stories that explain beliefs and natural phenomena but that do not have any supporting evidence for past events. Legends may support past events that actually happened or stories that are exaggerated.
One of the glyphs for Zero |
For many, the Maya civilization myths were just stories so that the phenomena of nature could be explained. But, how can we explain the stories of the star people? The ‘children of the sky’ that came on flying snakes and turtle shells to teach.
How could the Maya obtain such precise knowledge about astronomy, seed creation, infrastructure, astronomy, calendars, mathematics, medicine, and physics?
How can we explain the creation of a calendar that allowed the Maya to make perfect calculations of periods for up to 400 million years?
The Maya civilization had a symbol for zero, which appeared on Meso-American carvings as early as 36 BC. In Western Europe the zero appears until the 12th Century. This could not be explained years ago. With all the new technologies and advances in science, quantum mechanics, astronomy, mathematics, etc., everything has changed. There are so many things to learn from our past. I took out all my notes and stopped the publication of my book in 2011. I listened to the tapes, cassettes, and videos of my interviews, and tried to read what was left of my hundreds of notes. As far-fetched as my theory may seem, all this information only gave me more validation for my conclusion; knowledge of these highly advanced civilizations had to have been gained with the help of visitors from the stars or travelers from the future who returned to teach and help shape our world leaving many clues for us to decipher.
“88%of the locals died during the first ten years of colonial rule; a combination of disease, murdered, burning alive, and war.”
Spanish Bishop Fray Diego de Landa destroyed entire populations, but compiled, in the Relationship of Things in Yucatán, the great development that Maya medicine reached. He writes that the Inquisition in Maní, Yucatán, was imposed by him in the name of ‘the real and merciful god’, ending with a ceremony called Auto de Fé (Act of Faith) on July 12, 1562.
